Boudoir Louisville - Shooting a new studio set with an awesome client!

We shoot a lot of sessions at our Louisville, Ky studio. Sometimes, I get sick of shooting the same sets. Over the past few weeks, I have built 3 brand new boudoir sets to shoot in. A few of the pics below were snapped in one of the new sets. If you like the HUGE black bed that we shoot with, you better book your appointment now! I will be replacing it with another bed in the coming weeks.

This client was so easy to shoot! She was a little nervous at first, but after we started to shoot she loosened up and had a lot of fun with it. Her pics turned out fantastic!

Roxy was such a fun client to shoot with. She came to the Boudoir Louisville studio with a girlfriend. They both shot with us. Any time we get two girls that book our "Double Trouble" package, it always is a fun shoot from start to finish. Roxy had such a great selection of lingerie with her to choose from. It has difficult narrowing it down to just 6 outfits!

I'm a sucker for a tattooed girl with a pretty smile! Kelly was just that. She was so much fun to shoot. We started off snapping classic pinups and quickly moved into more of a retro boudoir thing. I love shooting girls with big, colorful tattoos. The brighter the better when it comes to tattoos! I always try to grab a few detail shots to mix in with the wide boudoir shots. Tattoos work great for this. It adds another thing to focus on besides the obvious body parts and jewelry.

We just wanted to say thanks to all of our great clients. Each year we have literally DOUBLED our business. We obviously couldn't have done it without you!

Bobbi was awesome! So much fun to shoot with. She brought tons of great lingerie outfits to shoot as well as some pinup items. She even brought one of those snazzy little hats! We shot boudoir! We shot Burlesque! We shot pinup! She was great at it all.

We love when Army wives book boudoir shoots with us. We think it is pretty cool to think about their reactions when they receive their book of photos. We started the shoot off with a fun Santa kitchen apron before moving into some classic boudoir. She also wanted to shoot in her fella's camo jacket. She was doing her shoot to give to her husband when he returned from a year long deployment. I'm pretty sure he will love it!

I wish we could show you her face, but her hubby is an officer in the Navy Reserve and he also works in broadcasting. It's not everyday that we transform a Marine into a pinup girl! Yesterday was one such day!
Ashley has been a fan of pinup for some time now and decided to give it a try!
She is a self proclaimed "GoofBall". I think this is a great quality to have when shooting pinup photos. Pinup is all about the facial expressions, and she nailed it!
If you don't like her pics, she just might beat your ass!

We just added a new pinup set to our studio. It's kind of an early 60's bachelor pad kinda thing. I still need to hit some more antique stores to find a few more pieces to add to this set, but for the most part, it is finished. I think the leopard carpet really ties the room together!

Sunday, we went to Indianapolis to shoot pinups with the drummers wife from the band GWAR! Nicole was so much fun to shoot with. Since she was touring with the band, we just decided to shoot her at the venue where her fella's band would be playing later that night. I found a few locations inside the bar to shoot and set the lights up. We ended up shooting 3 locations with 3 outfits in 30 minutes! It was a very quick shoot, but we got some great pics!

We like to have fun with our on location pinup girl photo shoots! Katy is a huge goof ball, so I knew she would be great at this set! We had her sit on a vintage table cloth with my little dog, Henry. I think she freaked him out a bit when she started to wave the butcher's knife around!

During our recent studio expansion and renovation, we decided to add a retro 50's beauty salon to the lounge area. It is a working set. We actually use it to get the girls hair and makeup ready for their shoots. A few days ago, we had the perfect client to test out the new set with. Jennifer was great. She is a big fan of the vintage pinup girl look. After Britt was finished giving her a snazzy new pinup hair do, I moved a studio light into the set and started shooting.

Roadside Grocery Store Pinup Girl Photo Shoot with Boudoir Louisville

For years, I have driven past this old time country grocery store. There are not too many of these around these days. Everyone wants to go to the larger chain grocery stores. This little building is packed to the rafters with stuff. They also serve one hell of a lunch!
I knew I wanted to shoot some sort of vintage pinup girl session here, just needed to put together the pieces. Lucky for me, I have some great friends that hook me up with awesome cars for my shoots. The main car in this shoot is a 1958 Brookwood Station Wagon. There is also a Chevy C10 in the background as well. As we were shooting, a totally restored Thunderbird convertible pulled up. What the hell, I told him were to park and fired a few shots off. By the time he arrived, the sun was way past its prime.
Libby was our pinup girl. She is a true Bombshell! This is our third time shooting Libby, and definitely not our last! Look for a behind the scenes video to come soon. Also grab the next issue of Retro Lovely Magazine, these will be in issue #8.

The History of Lingerie!

Today’s lingerie is thought of as elegant, beautiful and — for the most part — comfortable. But it hasn’t always been that way. Over the years, the “ideal” female figure has changed drastically, and therefore, so have the garments that accentuate that feminine shape. The bust and butt of a woman have always played a key role in the development of what’s stylish, but both have not always been emphasized. So, let’s take a quick look at lingerie over the years, and see why 21st century lingerie is the way to go.

The Beginning of Lingerie

The first undergarments go back to ancient Egypt (around 3000 B.C.). Egyptians of higher ranking would wear tunics as undergarments held up by a single shoulder strap. Because clothing was then thought of as a status symbol, slaves and servants either wore a simple loincloth or nothing at all.

In 2000 B.C., the first corset-type garment (see Corset History) was made in Crete, Greece. Lingerie then was specifically created to accentuate the shape of a women’s body, so women wore boned bodice corsets to tease their men. These corsets weren’t made for support or comfort, but to push the chest up and out on display for all to see, sort of glorifying this feminine attribute.

Middle Ages and Renaissance

Undergarments were also a sign of wealth during the Middle Ages (from roughly the 4th to 14th centuries). The upper class wore linen undergarments to protect their expensive clothes from getting dirty. Two of those undergarments were the chemise (or smock) and corset. However, the glorification of the chest had vanished. Society felt that the feminine figure should be restrained, so women started wearing corsets to flatten their chest and torso. These were not the small-waisted, curvy corsets; they were straight-lined corsets that made the female shape look stiff.

Women started going to great extremes during the Renaissance (from the 14th to 16th centuries) to achieve this flat stomach and narrow waist. They would sometimes constrict their body so tightly that their organs and ribs were squeezed out of shape. This led to the swooning and fainting of many women — not because women were feeble — but because they couldn’t breathe. According to records from the time, one woman even died because her ribs were squeezed so tightly that they punctured her liver.

The French Revolution and the Industrial Age Bring Softer Undergarments

Mass production of underwear started in the second half of the 1700s when the spinning jenny and the cotton gin were invented. Both of these machines made cotton fabrics more widely available. This is the first time that people began buying undergarments from stores instead of making them at home. One of the most popular garments was the union suit (similar to today’s long johns), which was made of knitted material and covered everything from the wrists to the ankles. However, there was a flap in the back that could open up if you needed to use the toilet.

The French Revolution brought a brief, but much-appreciated, period of time in the late 1700s where women revolted against the symbols of aristocracy, including stifling fashions like the corset. During this time, women went back to wearing only simple bands wrapped around their breasts.

The Victorians Invent Lingerie

In the 1800s, women began wearing boned corsets (or stays) again. These corsets were more decorative, with embroidery, ribbons and laces. They were made to enhance the female figure by pushing the chest up and out at the top. The Victorian’s (although said to be prude) were the ones that actually took lingerie and underwear to the next level in fashion. In 1829, they invented a corset with a front-bust fastening that allowed women to put on or take off their corset all on their own. And in 1830, they created the elastic corset, which offered even more comfort. Victorian England also introduced the frilled pantaloon and started creating undergarments for all kinds of activities from riding your bike to visiting the beach.

Because this era accentuated the hour-glass figure of the woman, it led to the first strip tease shows. And in 1876 — when garters were invented — French dancers created quite an uproar when they would show glimpses of their garters stretched across their thighs. However, garters served an important purpose too, functioning as an anchor to the corset so that it wouldn’t ride up.

Lingerie in the Early 20th Century (1900-1950)

At the beginning of the 1900s, Chalmers Knitting Company turned the union suit (or long john’s) into two pieces, basically inventing the modern undershirt and drawers. There were lacier versions for women, known as the camisole and drawers.

Because women started participating more in outdoor activities and dancing, they began trading in their corsets for a more comfortable option: the brassiere. In 1913, Mary Phelps Jacob made the first brassiere by tying two handkerchiefs together with ribbon. Originally, she did it just to cover the whalebone sticking out of her corset, which was visible through her sheer dress. But Jacob began making brassieres for her family and friends, and word of mouth soon spread. By 1914, Jacob had a patent for her design and was marketing it throughout the United States. At this same time, bloomers became popular because women were continuing to become more athletic.

During the 1920's, bloomers quickly became much shorter, looser and less supportive as the flapper-style came into fashion, and by the end of the decade they looked very much like modern panties. The increased sexuality of the flapper brought about the era of lingerie that we’re familiar with today.

Lingerie for the Modern Woman

After the 1920s, many companies tried to come up with new and different lingerie options. In the 1960s, the creation of the mini skirt led to the popularity of bikini briefs. And by the 1980s, wire bras had become the number-one seller. During that era, the thong also became popular in South America, especially in Brazil (even though it had been worn by exotic dancers before then). It was originally made to be a style of swimsuit, but by the 1990s, the design influenced the popularity of thong underwear.

Although it took a long time to get here, today's lingerie not only compliments the modern woman’s body, but it keeps her comfortable too. From romantic babydolls to erotic leather bustiers, 21st century lingerie now comes in a variety of styles and fabric that still stem from our history’s past. Glamour Gals: Pinup photography takes on new meaning at Boudoir Louisville

Looks can be deceiving. Just take the 1950s pinup for example. For some, the pinup is a classic, flirty sex-symbol. For others, the pinup is an illustration of female objectification. For photographer Ryan Armbrust, founder of Boudoir Louisville, the pinup is an example of female empowerment.

Boudoir Louisville, 414 Baxter Ave., is a photography studio that specializes in classic boudoir and retro pinup girl photography. Though his studio is located in Louisville, Armbrust also does photo shoots in such locations as Las Vegas, New Orleans, Cincinnati and Nashville.

“It kind of started as a hobby for my other photography business, Sniper Photo,” Armbrust said. “I just got sick of shooting corporate and commercial stuff, so I started shooting ’50s-style pinups and then I posted them on the Sniper Photo blog and generated a lot of inquiries. We’re almost at the three year mark (as a studio) and have shot about 500 girls.”

Among the 500 girls who have come to Boudoir Louisville, several are well beyond their 20s. Armbrust has had clients from age 18 to 64. While the women leave with a collection of glamorous photos, they also take away another added benefit: a huge boost in self-confidence.

“When you get close to 40, things aren’t always in the same place they were when you were younger,” said Bella White, who had photos taken at Boudoir Louisville when she was 37. “This makes you remember how beautiful you are. It was very empowering and a huge self-esteem booster.”

With the help of Armbrust’s assistant, Brittany Murphy, women are transformed into 1950s pinup models with bright red lipstick, false eyelashes and cat-eye makeup. For several of the women, the final reveal in front of the mirror is both surprising and exhilarating.

“(Brittany’s) amazing,” said Mary Queen, who had her photos taken when she was 43. “She’s a real artist. Afterwards I didn’t take my makeup off. My own mother didn’t recognize me when I met her at Panera.”

Like Queen and White, several women have come to Boudoir Louisville to celebrate the coming of their 40th birthday or to give their husbands a special anniversary gift. Others come to shoot photos as a bridal gift to their future husband or as a way to celebrate a divorce or throw a bachelorette party.

Whether the women are young, old, thin, out-of-shape or size zero models, they all seem to have one thing in common. Each of the women walk into the studio with some insecurity that they’re embarrassed about and want to hide. However, after the women leave Boudoir Louisville, they all seem to walk away loving their bodies and themselves more than before.

“Once we start shooting, every girl feels the need to tell me their problem areas,” Armbrust said. “They say, ‘I have stretch marks or baby belly or whatever.’ We’ll pop off a couple dozen pics, and I’ll show them there’s no stretch marks, no baby belly, and then they just relax.”

Murphy explained that one goal of Boudoir Louisville is to help women become confident in their skin and learn to love their body as it is.
“We’ve worked with so many different body types that you learn how to shoot to accentuate,” Murphy said. “We don’t ever ask them what they don’t like about their bodies; we ask them what they do like and we emphasize that. All women are self-conscious about something. But the girls always leave so happy. Our goal is always to make them like one more thing about their body that they didn’t when they came in.”

From what women have been saying, it appears that Boudoir Louisville is helping them do just that. With a fun, energetic atmosphere at the studio, and the easy-going, friendly demeanors of Armbrust and Murphy, women are coming into their own and becoming happier with their self-image at every age.

Another surprising benefit of the photo shoot is the built-in workout that comes with the poses. As Armbrust described, “Some of the poses are worse than P90X. Your feet are in the air for 20 seconds.” With pinup photography, women do every kind of pose from blowing kisses to sticking their legs straight in the air at a 90-degree angle.
It’s the art of posing that Armbrust is teaching women, not just in his studio but also in his book, “Shoot Sexy: Pinup Photography in the Digital Age,” slated to come out in January of 2012.

As for other projects, Boudoir Louisville has helped raise funds for cancer research by printing a pinup calendar to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Funding cancer research is Armbrust’s passion, especially since he survived stage four Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Boudoir Louisville will also donate a portion of proceeds from its October photo shoots to breast cancer research.

Looks can be deceiving, but after looking deeper into the enterprise of Boudoir Louisville, it’s becoming clear that pinup and boudoir photography is actually doing a lot of good for women’s self-esteem and society in general.

When girls are booking appointments with us, they always ask for outfit recommendations. One of the often overlooked pieces of clothing is the men's dress shirt. It can be worn with whatever bottoms you want. Toss in a pair of high heels and you are ready to shoot. Every time he wears this shirt to work, he will think about the pictures you snap in it!
We shot this client a few days ago. She was great to shoot with. She had such a long and lean model look about her. I know her man will love the pics!

We find props in the strangest of places. When looking around for knick knacks, we stumbled upon 2 great green chairs. Britt wanted them for her condo, but I snatched them from her for the studio. I'm glad I did! They look great on camera. This shoot was a lot of fun. Our awesome client ALMOST fell face first out of one of the green chairs. So glad this didn't happen. She had ninja-like reflexes and caught herself while in lingerie and heels! She's fantastic and was loads of fun to shoot with!

Well, I guess you just shoot her in her undies! A friend of mine decided he wanted to see his wife all dolled up like a bombshell and booked a session for her. We were excited to shoot her, but also a bit nervous. What if she hates her pics?! Talk about awkward dinner conversation...
We think they turned out great and more importantly, they loved them as well. I guess the only awkward dinner conversation now would be that I got to see all of her fancy new lingerie BEFORE he did.

We have shot "Pilot's Wife" a few times now at the Boudoir Louisville studio. We just can't get enough of her! She is so easy to shoot with. Great facial expressions, perfect smile etc...
We hosted another one of our pinup workshops for a photographer over in Washington DC, so we invited "Pilot's Wife" to be our model. She dazzled us again. She even pulled off one of the most difficult poses there is!

That's right folks! We have been slammed for the past few months and have not had time to update our website. Today I scheduled time for me to sit down and show the Boudoir Louisville website a little love! We updated the photos to include quite a few new clients. Don't worry, all photos added to our website and blog were done so with the clients permission.

Besides updating our pricing, we also added a new package! We have had a lot of people ask us about a higher end package. Normally we would just a la carte items to get them what they wanted. Not any more! We now have a super swanky package for all you fancy types!

The Bombshell

This is our most popular package.

You start off with our hair and makeup artist who transforms you into a BOMBSHELL!

Then my assistant, Britt, puts together the outfits you brought for your 2 hour-ish shoot.

We typically shoot 6 outfits for this package.

You will receive a private, password protected online gallery that will include

75-ish professionally edited and retouched pictures. You will then select 20 or so to be included in your snazzy 8"x8" leather hard cover book!

The Flirt

This photo shoot starts off with you in the hair and makeup chair. As soon as you have been transformed into the perfect Flirt, we begin your 3 outfit photo shoot. My assistant, Britt, will be there to pose you and make sure you look your very best!

You will receive a private, password protected online gallery that will include 35-ish professionally edited and retouched pictures. You will then select 20 of them to be included in a 6"x4" leather hard cover book!

The Double Trouble

Bring your favorite gal-pal, it's always more fun when you book with a friend!

What's included with the Double Trouble package?
You will both start out in our hair and makeup chair.
Then, each girl will receive her very own 4 outfit shoot.
You will each receive a private, password protected online gallery that will include 75-ish professionally edited and retouched pictures. You will each then select 20 of them to be included in a 8"x8" leather hard cover book for each of you!

The Ooo-La-La

Looking for a little something MORE! This package includes an 8 outfit photo shoot with up to 3 different hair and makeup looks.

You will receive a private, password protected online gallery that will include

125-ish professionally edited and retouched photos. We also include our HUGE 12"x12" leather hard cover book as well as a smaller 5"x5" "bedside" version. You will also receive a dvd of all edited photos with reprint rights.

Hot Rods and Pinup Girls kinda go hand in hand. What better place to shoot pinups than a great hot rod garage. My buddy Shawn has just this type of garage. It is packed floor to ceiling with really cool vintage stuff. Plenty to look at over here! He also has an old Chevy Gasser in there at this time. I wanted to do a set of pics where the pinup girl was working on an old car. We did a few of those and also shot a few of Bella on his Harley.
We have shot with Bella before. She is kind of a nut and fits right in with the Boudoir Louisville gang! Want proof? Be sure to check out our behind the scenes video from this shoot, COMING SOON!

2011 Miss Beatersville winner!

Every year, the Beatersville Car and Bike Show pulls into the Phoenix Hill Tavern in May. This year, Boudoir Louisville sponsored the Miss Beatersville pinup girl pageant. There were 18 or so girls this year. The winner was selected by attendees of the car show. What did you win? A Bombshell photo shoot with Boudoir Louisville, DUH!

The new studio continues to amaze me. I love having two whole walls of available light. So far, we have 3 of the shooting areas completed. We still have a few others that will be finished in the next week or so.
Libby dropped by the new Boudoir Louisville studio to snap a few pics that I needed for the new book. I just had to shoot a few of her in the new studio as well. We love us some Libby!

Navy Girl Pinups with Behind the Scenes Video from Boudoir Louisville!

It seems that the Navy Girl style of pinup has been really popular at our studio over the past few months! This has got to be my favorite though. Chrissy brought an awesome prop to use for her shoot. She found a 200 year old captain's wheel at an antique shop owned by one of the appraisers from American Pickers.
The base of the wheel kept moving and was not very big. We kept trying to get Chrissy posed comfortably on the wheel, but we realized that comfort wasn't an option. She was fantastic! Even though she only had 4 inches of space to sit on, she still managed to do it even with a smile. I know it hurt, but the pics turned out SUPER cute!
We hope to see Chrissy back at the Boudoir Louisville studio very soon!

Army Wife Boudoir Photo Session with Boudoir Louisville

With our Louisville studio being so close to the Fort Knox Army Base, we shoot a lot of Military Wives. We always love to hear their stories. Most of our Army Wives book sessions with us so they have a great gift to give their fella when he deploys or when he is due to return home. The client we shot this past weekend was part of a pinup party of Army Wives whose Husbands have been deployed since January. They are all due back in the next few weeks.
While her hubby was away, she started hitting the gym and watching what she ate. Her hard word REALLY paid off. She lost a whopping 120 pounds! We are so proud of her. She looks great and was so much fun to shoot with. I know her husband is going to love those pics!

When our client asked us if she could bring her little dog to the Boudoir Louisville studio to use as a prop for her pinup girl photo shoot, we were all over it! I've used my Mini Schnauzer in a few pinup shoots in the past. We have also shot a few other clients with their dogs as well. It's always interesting when you add a dog into the mix.
This little guy's name is Chester. He was very well trained and did about anything we wanted him to do. When he had enough, he would go lay down in his crate. GREAT dog!
Anyway, here are a few of the pics we shot during the shoot.

We could not wait to start shooting in our new studio expansion. We actually started shooting before anything was decorated! We now have one of our many new boudoir sets decorated. As soon as I saw the gorgeous lingerie that our client brought with her, I knew it would fit this set perfectly! We snapped a few boudoir shots of her laying in our new bed and also standing next to it. She wanted something a little more on the "moody" side, so I edited a few in a film noir style. I LOVE them in B&W!
